Best of Asia

Hoan Kiem Lake is in the heart of Hanoi, adjacent to the Old Quarter, a short walk from where we stayed

No photos are allowed in his mausoleum but, amazingly, Uncle Ho looks like he just died last week rather than 40 years ago!

After our city tour we were taken back to our hotel by cyclo!

The beauty of Halong Bay is otherworldly - part of Star Wars / The Phantom Menace was filmed here

We spent the night on board a traditional junk!

The water was great for swimming and kayaking!

Christopher's friend Thao joined us on board

We boarded the night train in Hanoi. The train station felt eerie. It was almost like we were traveling back in time.

The cabins were small but comfortable - though it looked like they'd never changed the sheets!

As soon as we arrived the next morning it was off to the market...

They had everything you could possibly need or want!

And a few things that you could probably do without!

Want to buy a water buffalo?

And everyone left with a little something!

Next up - a homestay. We were jumping for joy!

We hiked all day and shared what we had!

Hmm... this must be the barn...

Yes, this is ... authentic!

Perhaps this WC is a little TOO authentic...

Yes! Dinner!

Time to move on ...

To Saigon - the Cu Chi tunnels.

Incredibly claustrophobic. The Viet Cong lived in these tunnels, materializing out of nowhere to attack US soldiers.

Ahh.. luxury... at last!

We watched the sun go down over the Mekong River.

Drinks and appetizers were served...

And a little sightseeing...

Then dinner...

Next up: Angkor Wat. Our carriage awaits!

And before we know it, it's time for goodbyes...

And a long way up!

It's a long way down!

'Once more unto the breach...'

This time in northern Thailand!
